A photovoltaic (solar electric) system literally means photo, (produced by light) and voltaic, (producing a direct electrical current by chemical reaction). With a solar electric system you get 100% clean energy from the sun. Light rays from the sun, those you can see (visible light) and some that you can’t see (ultra-violet light) both help to produce electricity in the panels. The sunlight reacts with the silicon in the PV modules and the free electrons, which are collected to form DC electricity. DC electricity is then converted by an inverter to AC power for your use. The InverterThe inverter converts DC (direct current) power to AC (alternating current) for use in your home. The alternating current is fed directly into your home, just like your local electrical provider. The inverter is enclosed in an attractive cabinet and can be mounted inside the home, garage, or on an outside wall. System Size and locationThe best orientation for a solar installation is on a south-facing roof. Flat roofs are also acceptable as arrays can be on frames tilted toward the south at an optimal angle. If a rooftop cannot be used, your array can also be place as a ground mount or pole mount. On average, each 1000 watts (1KW) will require 100 sq ft. of roof or ground space. Several factors determine the size of the system that you select; available roof or ground space, the percentage of electricity you would like to reduce, and budget requirements. Net MeteringNet metering allows utility customers to be credited full retail price for the electricity their renewable energy system sends back to the grid. During the day when the solar panels are producing electricity, your house will be using the solar energy made by natural sunlight. At night your electrical provider will provide your energy. You would only be responsible for the net difference. LongevitySolar energy systems provide your home with power for 25 years and longer. Most modules have a 25-year warranty on power production. AppreciationSolar powered energy systems can actually appreciate the overall value of your home. In today’s market, solar panels can increase the value of a home or business by as much as $20,000.00 for every $1000.00 saved in utilities annually. This could actually increase as utility rates continue to rise. And while you gain an appreciation of your property, by Texas law, your taxes cannot reflect the increase due to the value of the solar system. Easy MaintenanceWith no moving parts, solar systems are virtually maintenance free. An occasional cleaning of the modules, usually taken care of by rain, is all that is required. |
